The 2026 Goldstein Lecture Will Feature Dr. Subhash Aryal

Dr. Subhash Aryal
The 2026 Goldstein Lecture, presented by the Osteopathic Research Center, will be Oct. 7, 2026, at noon via Zoom. Dr. Subhash Aryal will present "Use of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Pain Research: Opportunities and Obstacles."
Subhash Aryal, PhD, is a professor and director of the Biostatistics and Methods Core at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Dr. Aryal earned his PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago and has served in leadership roles at the University of Pennsylvania, where he directed the BECCA Lab, and UNT Health, where he held tenured appointment in Public Health. He currently serves as the statistical editor for Anesthesiology and Anesthesiology Open, official publications of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. His methodological expertise encompasses sample size calculation, construction of prediction and tolerance intervals and advanced statistical methods for hierarchical and mixed-effects models — reflected in his co-authored textbook Statistical Methods for Groundwater Monitoring (Wiley) and numerous publications in top-tier journals including JAMA Network Open, Biometrics and Journal of Pain.
Dr. Aryal has made sustained contributions to chronic pain research through his long-standing collaboration with the PRECISION Pain Research Registry. His collaborative work has generated critical evidence on the effectiveness of long-term opioid therapy for chronic low back pain, racial disparities in opioid use and lumbar spine surgery, the impact of shared decision-making on opioid prescribing and discontinuation, and the role of physician empathy in improving chronic pain outcomes. His research has also addressed the social determinants of health associated with opioid use and explored the clinical differences between osteopathic and allopathic treatment approaches for pain management over 36-month follow-up periods.
