Publication - "Association of Clinical Empathy with Suicidal Ideation Among Patients with Chronic Pain: Target Trial Emulation"

Congratulations to Student Doctor Naomi Fortier on co-authoring an original research article published in the British Journal of General Practice, titled “Association of Clinical Empathy with Suicidal Ideation Among Patients with Chronic Pain: Target Trial Emulation.” Conducted under the mentorship of John Licciardone, DO, MS, MBA, and Subhash Aryal, PhD, the study used data from the PRECISION registry to examine the impact of physician empathy on patients with chronic pain. The findings showed that patients treated by more empathic physicians reported feeling less helpless and experienced 40% less suicidal ideation over 12 months compared to those treated by less empathic physicians. As a top-performing TCOM student and participant in the Osteopathic Research Center’s research training programs, Fortier’s work highlights the powerful role of empathy in patient care and the value of providing meaningful research opportunities for future physicians.
