Timeline & Milestones
- While at Texas Tech in 2006, Dr. O’Bryant drafted a dream proposal to create the first-ever diagnostic blood test for the cognitive disease.
- O’Bryant studied the brain tissue and blood of genetically modified mice, attempting to match biomarkers present in both.
- Research at UNT Health began in 2012.
- The Health & Aging Brain Study (HABS-HD) derived from our need for more representation in data collection.
- $145 million federal grant is the largest research grant ever awarded to UNT Health.
- PET scans began in February 2021.
- HABS-HD is the most comprehensive study of Alzheimer's among various communities ever conducted.
- In 2025 we exceeded our outreach goal at 100% and enrolled over 5,000 participants.
- We now have the largest collection of brain scans for any brain aging study worldwide.
