Message from Dr. Maria Crompton
Welcome—and thank you for your interest in Rural Medicine!
Across Texas, rural and underserved communities face a growing need for compassionate, skilled physicians. At the Rural Osteopathic Medical Education (ROME) program, our mission is simple: to prepare future doctors who will help build healthier rural communities through innovative, hands-on training.
We believe rural medicine is deeply aligned with the osteopathic philosophy—centered on family, home, and whole-person care. Our students learn not only clinical excellence, but also the importance of listening to rural voices and creating patient-centered solutions that truly fit the communities they serve.
ROME alumni are making an impact everywhere—from military bases and top-tier residency programs to small-town clinics where they serve as trusted caregivers and community leaders. Many return to teach, helping shape the next generation of rural physicians.
If you’re someone who feels called to serve, who values relationships over routine, and who finds joy in diverse days and starlit nights, we invite you to explore what ROME has to offer. Our program is competitive, but deeply rewarding—and we’re proud to support students who are ready to make a difference.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re happy to answer your questions and share more about our passion for rural medicine.
