Vocabulary

Stands for "What You See Is What You Get." It’s the toolbar (similar to Microsoft Word) where you do your actual typing and formatting.

  • PCF (Publish Control File): The actual file you edit in the CMS. It looks like a webpage but has a .pcf extension
  • OUNAV: Files with extension .ounav. OUNAV files provide a simple interface for adding, deleting, editing and organizing navigation links for a folder section.
  • Dependency Tags: Instead of a regular URL (like unthealth.edu/about.html), Modern Campus uses tags (like *** Broken Link ***). This ensures that if you move a page, the links to it don't break.

To edit a page, you must "check it out" (turning the lightbulb icon yellow). This locks the page so two people don't try to edit the same thing at once.

The "hidden" way to log in. Usually a date or copyright symbol in the website's footer that takes you directly to the editor for that specific page.

Snippets: Pre-formatted content blocks (like a pull-quote or a multi-column layout) that you can drop onto a page to keep things looking professional.

Assets: Centralized pieces of content (like a contact footer or a gallery) that can be used on many pages. If you update the Asset once, it updates everywhere. (User levels 9 and 10)

  • Staging: The private "sandbox" where you make and save changes.

  • Production: The live web server. Changes aren't "real" to the public until you publish them from Staging to Production.

Best Practices

Always add Alt Text to images for screen readers and use Headings (H2, H3) in the correct order. Do not skip from H2 to H4 just because you like the font size.

When pasting text from Microsoft Word or an email, always use the "Clear Formatting" button. This prevents "messy" code from breaking your site's design.

When you submit your edits for approval, leave a brief note (e.g., "Updated Spring 2026 deadline"). This makes it much easier to "revert" to an older version if you make a mistake later.
