History of the Be|Well QEP
Be|Well was born out of UNT Health's regional re-accreditation process through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC). As part of that process, UNT Health was required to develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) spanning five successive years. The QEP is designed to improve student learning or student success outcomes, with stakeholders integrated across the institution throughout the process.
The topic of wellbeing was selected through a deliberate, community-driven process. A university-wide survey was followed by focus groups and conversations with UNT Health leadership. A planning committee with representation from across campus examined wellbeing models and programs at similar institutions and consulted experts in the science, scholarship, and practice of wellbeing. From that process, three student learning outcomes emerged, reflecting what UNT Health expects of its future graduates.
Student Learning Outcomes (QEP)
The QEP Planning Committee developed three Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) with a clear goal: to prepare future health professionals who can successfully care for themselves as well as others. The committee recognized that emotional intelligence and resilience are not supplementary skills — they are foundational to entering today's healthcare environment and sustaining a meaningful career within it.
The SLOs were developed to span multiple professional disciplines, including medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, and physician assistant studies, as well as graduate programs in biomedical sciences and public health. Throughout the implementation of the QEP, students across these programs were expected to meet the following outcomes:
Activities developed to achieve SLO1 address students’ knowledge of well-being, emotional intelligence, resiliency, and burnout. An online, interactive, educational module on Canvas introduces students to these concepts and provides information on existing, integrated student success and well-being resources throughout the UNT Health campus.
Students take the EQ-i 2.0, an assessment of emotional intelligence. Faculty leaders guide students into development of their individualized growth plan by using their EQ-i 2.0 results. The three EI skills associated with stress management (flexibility, stress tolerance, and optimism) are targeted in each student’s stress management growth plan. This guided development educates students on the domains and subdomains included in the EQ-i 2.0 as well as how to apply these constructs to their personal well-being and individualized growth plan.
SLO 3 builds on each student’s personalized stress management growth plan. SLO3 develops each students’ understanding and engagement in activities and behaviors that promote resilience. A train-the-trainer program is utilized to prepare selected faculty and staff in each program and school to teach students about resilience and its relationship to overall well-being. All students participate in an introductory session that includes four key modules. Subsequently, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of programs and activities to practice the new skills. Based on these skill practice sessions, students develop a toolkit of resilience and well-being skills that will support them throughout their time as a student and into their professional work. Be|Well has grown well beyond its QEP origins. What began as a five-year accreditation initiative has become a permanent part of the UNT Health student experience, continuously evolving to meet the needs of our campus community. The SLOs that guided the QEP remain at the heart of everything we do today.
