Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary work authorization for F-1 students. It allows you to work in a job that’s directly related to your major. There are two types of OPT: Pre-Completion and Post-Completion.
Pre-Completion OPT
Pre-Completion OPT happens before you finish your program. You can use it:
- During the school year (part-time only, up to 20 hours/week)
- During official school breaks (full-time is allowed)
You must still be a full-time student while doing Pre-Completion OPT. Any time used for Pre-Completion OPT will be deducted from your total 12 months of OPT eligibility.
Post-Completion OPT
Post-Completion OPT happens after you complete your degree program. It allows you to work full-time in the U.S. in a job related to your major.
You can apply as early as 90 days before your program end date, and no later than 60 days after. Most students choose this option after graduating
F-1 students may be eligible if they:
- Have been enrolled full-time for at least one academic year
- Are in valid F-1 status
- Have not already used 12 months of full-time CPT (part-time does not count)
- Have not already been granted OPT at your current degree level or higher
- Plan to work in a job related to their major
You can apply for Post-Completion OPT:
- As early as 90 days before your program end date
- As late as 60 days after your program end date
USCIS must receive your application within 30 days of the date your DSO issues the OPT I-20.
- Take the OPT Course in Canvas
- Pay for the OPT Maintenance Fee to ISO
- Submit the OPT Request Form in iNorthTX
- Receive your new I-20 with OPT recommendation
- Submit your application to USCIS (online or by mail)
- Pay the $470 application fee
- Wait for USCIS approval and receive your EAD card
You cannot begin working until your EAD card arrives and your approved start date has arrived.
While on Post-Completion OPT, you must:
- Work at least 20 hours per week
- Work in a position directly related to your major
- Have paid or unpaid work (see information on volunteer work)
Multiple jobs, internships, and self-employment are allowed, as long as the work is directly related to your degree field.
You’re allowed up to 90 days of unemployment during your 12-month OPT period. The unemployment count starts from your OPT start date (not graduation).
To avoid violating your F-1 status, report your employment and updates on time.
Once your OPT is approved, you are required to:
- Report your employer’s name, address, and job title
- Provide a brief explanation of how the job relates to your major
- Update your residential address, email, or any changes in employment
- Changes in employer or contact information have to be reported within 10 days.
You’ll report this using the SEVP Portal, which will be available to you after OPT approval. Alternatively, you may report using your iNorthTX Portal and a DSO will report on your behalf.
If you don’t have an SSN, you can:
- Request one as part of your OPT application, or
- Apply separately at a local Social Security office after receiving your EAD card
You need an SSN to report taxes in U.S. You may begin work while the SSN issuance is pending.
You have a 60-day grace period after your OPT end date to:
- Leave the U.S.
- Transfer to a new school
- Start another program at UNT Health
- Change your immigration status
Working during this time is not allowed.
If your employer files an H-1B petition while your OPT is still active and it’s selected in the lottery, you may qualify for a Cap Gap Extension. This extends your work authorization through April 1st while you wait for the H-1B to begin.
You’ll need to provide proof to ISO to update your I-20.
