About UNT Health Sustainability
Our university’s mission is to "create solutions for a healthier community." UNT Health Sustainability within Facilities Management supports that mission by advancing sustainable practices on campus through educational outreach, programs and initiatives and our own campus operations.
Key Initiatives
The Office of Sustainability was founded in 2012 after the UNT Health students voted in a fee to fund environmental improvements on campus. This fee, the Sustainable Campus Fee, helps fund many programs, projects and events on campus such as:
- UNT Health Community Garden
- Hydroponic Gardens
- Composting
- Reduce – Reuse – Recycle
- Labs & Freezers
- Alternative Transportation

- Festive Fits & Decor Swap: We are hosting a swap of gently used or new seasonal and holiday decorations and apparel on October 14-16th in MET 209. Learn all the details on our Events Page!
- Now Recruiting Students & Employees for the Sustainability Committee: Do you have a passion for sustainability and are a current employee or student? Join the UNT Health Sustainability Committee! We meet every other month, and our first meeting is on October 1st. Contact us to learn more.
- NEW Hydroponic Gardens: With funds from the Sustainable Campus Fee, UNT Health Sustainability purchased two indoor hydroponic gardens to grow healthy, fresh produce for our students. We donate veggies to the Student Food Pantry every Wednesday. Learn more about the gardens!
- COMPOSTING SERVICE: Composting is one of the best ways to live more sustainably since it diverts material from the landfill and contributes to healthier soil. UNT Health Sustainability will initiate a compost drop-off for both home and campus compost for our students and employees. Learn more here.
- LEAP: Work in a lab? Get involved with the Lab Efficiency Action Program (LEAP). We’ve redesigned the program to be better than ever.
- Sustainable Office Certification (SOC): SOC highlights sustainable practices in office environments and offers a framework with resources to implement them. Offices are recognized and awarded based on the number of actions they complete. Contact us to get started.
